Why I joined Fathom: Tricia Lewis
From time to time, Fathom invites recent hires to share their experience in deciding to join our team. In this blog, Tricia Lewis, Strategy and Operations Analyst, Medical Coding, tells the story of her decision to join Fathom and make a difference in the world of healthcare.
As a coder and auditor, my work makes the most impact when I have the time to use my knowledge and critical thinking skills to solve a problem that results in a million correctly coded claims.
Rather than toiling all day through tedious production coding and only tackling a handful of encounters, I want to magnify the impact of my work on an exponential scale — that's what Fathom helps me do.
Career chronicles
I've worked as a coder, auditor, educator, and denials analyst for health systems. My coding experience is multispecialty, but my favorites are pediatric intensivist and pediatric specialty surgery.
I love my job and want to make a real difference for the organizations and providers I partner with. But I was growing tired of the constant loop of audit, educate, guidelines change, educate again, audit again, then another guidelines change. It felt like I was pouring water into a leaky bucket.
When I learned about AI and its ability to enhance medical coding, I knew I wanted to work with it in my next role. But when searching for my next opportunity, I spoke to other AI coding companies, and found that their coding was far from autonomous and accuracy was below my expectations. I knew Fathom was different from the first interview.
Building with Fathom
I'm not too sure when exactly someone has earned the right to call themselves a seasoned professional, but with over 15 years of experience in revenue cycle coding and auditing, I like to think I know enough to recognize when a solution is truly outstanding. Fathom's stunning level of automation and the accuracy rates (higher than that of human coders) confirmed that this was where I wanted to be.
Fathom's use of cutting-edge technology to solve two of the biggest problems in healthcare – provider burnout and rising costs – also particularly appealed to me. Providers are exhausted, and coding guidelines are complicated and constantly in flux, so technology like Fathom's to ease the burden on providers and reduce costs is a no-brainer. Fathom empowers organizations to increase coding speed and accuracy, frees up providers' time and resources, and allows coders to focus on solving complex and nuanced problems.
I've been with Fathom for almost four months as a Strategy and Operations Analyst in Medical Coding and am having an amazing time. The team here is incomparable. Everyone is at the top of their game. Each team member is passionate about their role and brings energy and enthusiasm to each project. Each new person I met during the interview process left me thinking, "I am dying to work with you!"
Working at Fathom is rewarding and challenging in the best way. I am constantly learning and growing — it has not only made me a more thoughtful coder, but it has enhanced my customer service skills, my project management skills, and, more than anything, my critical thinking skills. My Coding Quality team has taught me so much and helped me become a more skilled, more well-rounded team member. Fathom is the best opportunity for highly skilled coders to develop a best-in-the-world autonomous coding solution to make healthcare better for everyone.
