Why I joined Fathom: Morgan Barisich
From time to time, Fathom invites recent hires to share about their experience in deciding to join our team. In this blog, Morgan Barisich, Client Growth Lead, tells the story of her decision to join Fathom to make a real-world impact on healthcare through automation.
This past year has been one of immense change for me. I resigned from my previous company, took a 5-month sabbatical, planned a wedding, got married, planned a honeymoon, and traveled to both Colombia and Thailand. During my time off from work (on top of, you know, all the wedding planning), I pondered what I needed from my next role—to be very intentional and purposeful about where I worked next. So, let me tell you about why I joined team Fathom.
They call me "Client Growth Lead"
While that's my formal title, what excites me most about my role is that, when I do my job well, I make an actual impact in the healthcare world. I make things better for patients, better for doctors, and better for the medical coders who can focus on more complex cases.
Engaging work with amazing people
Thus far in my career, I've learned how incredibly important it is to actually like the people I'm surrounded by, especially when facing challenges. When I'm unsure, or working late, or stuck in a room whiteboarding, I want to have people working with me who are smart, self-driven, and who I can pause and laugh with.
And so far, I'm so grateful that the Fathom team checks all of these boxes.
Disrupting long-time systems
Beyond who I'm doing the work with, it's important that I believe in the work that I'm doing. I joined Fathom because healthcare is ripe for disruption in many ways. And while medical coding isn't the "sexiest" topic, I get excited about automation and how we can make medical coding more accurate, more efficient, and less costly.
Traditionally, medical coding has been a highly manual and sometimes subjective process, but Fathom is using deep learning to radically change this space—and how the entire industry thinks about medical coding. I spent several years of my career shepherding companies through the re-design and deployment of intelligent automation, and I'm thrilled to be back in this type of role once again.
Finding my path without a map
Finally, charting a path and not knowing what your day will look like is scary for many. But, for me, that's the best part. Fathom is a true startup, and I know that many of the decisions I make will have a long-lasting impact on the company—and set it up for long-term success.
I'm writing this in only my fourth week of working here, and I already feel completely validated in the reasons why I chose Fathom!
