Why I joined Fathom: Charlotte Norman
From time to time, Fathom invites recent hires to share about their experience in deciding to join our team. In this blog, Charlotte Norman, Content Manager, tells the story of her decision to join Fathom and make a difference in the world of healthcare.
Why did I join Fathom?
The answer requires me to dig a little deeper.
I grew up not thinking about healthcare. To me, it was a given — something everyone had access to, regardless of status or wealth. It wasn’t until I came to America for my undergraduate degree that I realized how privileged I was to take healthcare for granted.
During one of my first weeks at college, a friend told me about someone breaking their leg at her house and how hard it was getting her into the car to go to the hospital. Why didn’t you call an ambulance? I asked. She looked at me, shocked, and asked if I knew how much it cost. Baffled, I told her I assumed they were free.
Imagine my shock when I found out that not only do you get charged for calling an ambulance, but it’s also very expensive, sometimes prohibitively so.
Innovation and change
Learning about how the healthcare system is set up in America was incredibly eye-opening and slightly disheartening.
When the opportunity came up at Fathom, an autonomous medical coding software company, I jumped at the chance to be part of a solution that can make a tangible difference in the lives of those accessing and providing healthcare.
Medical coding is a process that involves the conversion of a medical document, like a doctor’s diagnosis or a prescription for medication, into a numeric or alpha-numeric code. Given that there are thousands and thousands of codes for every type of affliction, procedure, and prescription you can think of, medical coding is usually incredibly time and labor-intensive.
Fathom’s tech uses deep learning AI to automate this process, saving thousands of hours, increasing ROI, and reducing employee burnout.
Be on the lookout for more thought leadership pieces, customer success stories, and team insights as I build out the content function here at Fathom — I’m excited to see where this journey takes me!
